I saw Dr. Leifheit right after giving birth to my son. While waiting to see him, a very average-sized man went to his appointment before me. I could hear the conversation between him and Dr. Leifheit through the wall and the first thing the doctor said to this man was "it looks like you've gained some weight", to which the man said, "actually, I've lost weight since you last saw me." Right at that moment, my stomach dropped. I knew what I was going to be walking into with Dr. Leifheit, and I was not wrong.

Dr. Leifheit has a scale in his office (surprising for an osteopath, but whatever) and when I told him I did not want to know my weight (after years of restricting and disordered eating, I no longer weigh myself), the doctor said, "just because you don't want to hear it doesn't mean it's not a problem." And then he proceeded to tell me that I had better do something about myself or else I would be a "decrepit" mother to my son.

I have never felt more embarrassed or shamed by a health care provider in my life. And now, looking back, I realize with utter clarity that there was NOTHING wrong with me-- it was all HIM. He is the one who should be so utterly ashamed of himself, of his lack of current knowledge about weight and health and it's connection (or lack thereof.) To put this in context, I had just had a very smooth and easy pregnancy at age 40 where my OB was telling me-- at EVERY visit-- how she wished all her patients were as healthy as I was. And yet, with one look at me, Dr. Leifheit summed me up, decided he knew me and passed his disgusting, ill-informed judgement.

Dr. Leifheit, get over yourself. Go and learn about the origins of the BMI and about HAES. Get yourself into this decade and update your thinking. You are doing real HARM to people with body issues and you can do way, way better.

For any of you with weight or body issues, stay far, far away from this man.

he has personally helped me through some of the worst struggles in my life with injuries after a nasty on the job accident leading to several back procedures and five miserable knee operations and therapy and all that comes with it. His wisdom and compassion and advice has given me the confidence to rebound and retrain myself leading to a new wonderful career. He helped me deal with Washington State L and I and all their ugly ways.

Dr. Leifheit is one of the most caring physicians I know. He goes above and beyond to make sure the imaging of my back and treatment was done in a timely manner. He gets to the root cause of the problem and corrects the issue. I highly recommend Dr. Leifheit if your having back pains or other musculoskeletal problems. He is extremely knowledgable and really cares about his patients. My only regret is not finding him sooner!
